The Bach Society of Charleston, Charleston’s premier period instrument ensemble, is delighted to be able once again to offer our Bach Festival. This flagship concert celebrates J.S. Bach’s birthday, and the 20th anniversary of the arrival in Charleston of music director Ricard Bordas and his wife, noted soprano Margaret Kelly Cook. On the program are two of Bach’s most attractive cantatas: # 84 “Ich bin vergnügt” (I am so lucky) with its joyful duets for soprano and oboe, and the expressive # 78 “Jesu, der du meine Steele” (Jesu, the very thought of thee), so appropriate for Lent, containing the ebullient duet for soprano and counter-tenor Ricard: “Wir eilen”. Our quartet of singers is joined by strings and woodwind from the North Carolina Baroque Orchestra, who also offer the popular Orchestral Suite # 2, closing with its brilliant flute showpiece, the Badinerie.
